In 2020, Natasha Trethewey, Pulitzer Prize-winner and two-term US Poet Laureate, released her long-awaited book Memorial Drive: A Daughter’s Memoir. Memorial Drive is a chillingly personal and exquisitely wrought memoir of a daughter reckoning with the brutal murder of her mother at the hands of her former stepfather. The murder of Ms. Trethewey’s mother, Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough, had another life-altering consequence: it led to the founding of Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence in Decatur. In her first visit to Atlanta since the release of her book, Natasha Trethewey was the honoree and keynote speaker at the Women’s Resource Center’s Champions for Change fundraiser on May 5, 2022. The event hosted 300 attendees in person and another 50 guests from home.
